Words of Wisdom ... get out the vote for Jerry!
TSPS state elections will be out soon, so be sure to take the couple of minutes and make your choices for our leaders. Chapter 5 member Jerry Lehew is a nominee for 2nd VP, so help support Jerry by casting your vote for him. He has served as Chapter President of both Chapters 5 & 2 and has been active at the state level for many years. He is currently serving as a Director on the TSPS Board of Directors, and is the TSPS Liaison to the TBPLS. Jerry will serve all TSPS members well.
In the Rearview Mirror...
The August Chapter meeting was held at the Mecca Restaurant in east Dallas. Former TSPS President and current NSPS Governor Pat Smith came up from Austin to discuss NSPS issues, particularly the upcoming decision facing TSPS members regarding membership in NSPS. A nice crowd of about 25 were present on a stormy night at a new meeting venue.
Chapter 5 Committee Reports
PUBLIC RELATIONS: (Gary Matthews)
Meet & Greet Incoming Chapter President Pat Baldasaro is hitting the ground running. Pat has made inquiries with several local state legislators in an effort for Chapter 5 to arrange for dialogue. This is a priority activity at the TSPS state level, as history has proven these activities to be extremely valuable when survey related issues arise during the legislative session. The events serve to introduce ourselves as professionals, educate the legislator and their staff as to who we are and what we do. Let’s assist Pat in these efforts, as the Dallas area has some of the most influential and powerful legislators who we need as friends.
Planning continues for a November Boy Scout event at Old City Park. City staff have invited TSPS Chapter 5 to participate with survey equipment displays, frontier surveyor reenactment, and a brief historical lecture by author Susanne Starling.
Skills high school teacher Bart Burnett has transferred to a high school in Grand Prairie ISD, and wants Chapter 5 to know he will be seeking their support and assistance as he builds another Skills survey team at his new school. He also reminds us that Duncanville H.S. will continue with its strong Skills program.
TSPS Executive Director D J Kyle is talking to Bart about making booth space available to area Skills programs at the TSPS convention, as well as performing the opening flag ceremony.
Chapter 5 has been requested to assist with a donation to the SKILLS Fall Leadership Conference, which it has done so for several years. No word yet as to any decision or action by the Chapter Executive Committee.

TREASURER'S REPORT: (John Pierce):
John reported that the Chapter continues to enjoy a healthy financial position, both in the general fund and in the scholarship fund. These monies allow Chapter 5 to maintain its leadership position among the Chapters, and allows the Chapter to be in a position to contribute financially to a variety of great civic and academic opportunities throughout the year.
CHAPTER REP: (Chris Freeman):
The next regularly scheduled TSPS Board of Directors Meeting will be held on Thursday October 31 8 a.m.-9 a.m. The Annual TSPS Membership Meeting will follow at 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
On the Horizon ... the votes are in
Chapter 5 elections The votes are in from recent Chapter elections. A ballot of candidates was organized by Nominating Committee Chairman Jason Jernigan, and results will be announced at the September 10 Chapter meeting to be held at the Spring Creek BBQ Restaurant in Addison. Incoming TSPS President Shane Neally will be coming over from Tyler to perform the new Officer installation. Please join in welcoming our new Chapter leaders, and find a way to assist them, our Chapter and state organization, and our profession to be stronger and more vibrant as we go forward.
