In the Rearview Mirror…

--- Another strong turnout for the monthly Chapter meeting in August.  Pam Kersh of ESRI provided an informative presentation on GIS, a growing opportunity for anyone operating in the geospatial world.  Good discussion followed the presentation.  40 attendees.

---New TSPS website…our state association has recently undertaken efforts to upgrade and modernize the TSPS website in an effort to better serve members.  While still ongoing, when the dust settles it should offer everyone more resources and better communications.  Take a peek at www.tsps.org

---TSPS Strategic Planning and Quarterly Board Meeting in Frisco…This year TSPS held its annual Strategic Planning event at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Convention Center in Frisco on Friday August 20th.  The event is held so TSPS leaders, Committee members, and interested members can gather, discuss ideas, develop plans, and set a course for the upcoming year, and beyond.  Incoming TSPS President John Watson emphasized the importance of following through on ideas, and for accountability.  Often in volunteer organizations the work is put on the backburner, and in the end, progress is stalled comes to a screetching halt.  With budget concerns, it is important that everyone pitch in and assist in their own way. While the state organization plots its course, it is important that Chapter 5 members remain active at the local level.  Chapter 5 is looked upon to be a leader by other Chapters.  Strong local chapters translate into a strong state association.

    Opportunities for You….

---Chapter 5 Ballot for 2010-2011…a ballot has been prepared by the Nominating Committee and will soon be available for members to select their leaders for the upcoming year.  Voters will be asked to select a 2nd Vice president, as well as two new 2 Year Directors.  New Chapter Officer Installation will take place on Tuesday evening, September 14th, at the Cantina Laredo Restaurant, with incoming TSPS president John Watson doing the Installation.  Be sure to come out and share with this “changing of the guard”, as Chapter 5 continues onward as a leader among Chapters within TSPS.  We will not be jointly meeting with Chapter 2 for this event as we have in the past, as they have decided to have their own Installation.

---TSPS Convention & Exhibits… check the association’s website for information on CEU courses available for the annual TSPS Convention being held in Houston this year.  It looks like a variety of different topics are available, and it’s a great value to pick up 12 CEU’s for $200 (full registration).  The TBPLS is also scheduled to hold one of its Board meetings (Friday October 15), and attendees receive 4 CEU’s for attending those meetings.

---Skills USA/Duncanville High School Survey Program…Bart Burnett is anxious for the new school term because the Survey Program there has great expectations for the coming year.  The students and Bart want to “ramp it up” and take the program to a higher and more challenging level.  This is going to be a great opportunity for Chapter 5 members to continue to lead the SKILLS survey programs, both statewide, and now even nationwide.  More news is sure to follow, but this will be one of the greatest opportunities for Surveyors to influence the future of the profession, so strap on your boots, boys!

---Membership…a recent inquiry to the TSPS office in Austin revealed that there are currently 188 members in Dallas Chapter 5, down 31 from last year.  As renewals come around towards the end of the calendar year, make an effort to renew, and encourage your professional and paraprofessional staff to join, too.

----SIT & RPLS Exam Study Groups

October is getting close! Halff Associates will host three study groups before
the October exams for anyone studying for the SIT or RPLS exams. If you've come
before – welcome back! If this is your first time we look forward to meeting
you. Anyone from any company is more than welcome to come.

Here is what we do: SIT candidates study in their own group. Everyone is
encouraged to bring books or study material and a TBPLS approved calculator.
There is no formal lecture. It is just a bunch of people working through
problems to prepare for the NCEES exam. The group moves at whatever pace the
participants set. It is a great opportunity to learn from your peers and meet
people from different companies. Chances are if you're having trouble with a
certain subject or problem, one of the other people in the group knows the
answer and can help you with it.

RPLS candidates also meet in their own group and work through analytical
problems. Several topics from the legal portion of the exam also come up, but
the main focus of the group is the analytical portion. It tends to be harder to
study for alone. Analytical problems are notoriously hard to come by, so if you
have any, please bring them. Bring your TBPLS approved calculator and some
    colored pencils for deed sketches.

The first meeting this season will be Saturday, September 11, from 8am-noon at
Halff Associates' Richardson office (Click here for map). The next
two meetings are tentatively scheduled for September 25 and October 9 in the same
time slot. As always, there is no charge for the groups and breakfast is
provided for those who RSVP. Please RSVP by emailing Jason Jernigan at jjernigan@halff.com

You can keep track of group meetings and access study material through the following two Yahoo groups.  We’ve had Spam in the Yahoo groups recently so I’ve restricted who can become a member.  This won’t affect you if you’re already a member, but I will have to approve any new people who want to join.  Approval could take up to a day.

---North Lake College Fall Semester Survey Courses….Several of the Survey courses “made” for the Fall semester, including Introduction to Surveying, Surveying Calculations, GIS Applications, and Survey Legal Principals I.  Support from local firms is essential in maintaining and growing a local surveying educational program that will benefit local employees and companies, and the profession, too.

--Monthly Meeting Program/Speaker ideas?  If you have an idea regarding a Speaker or meeting Program, contact Program Committee Chairman Paul Mannel (817) 293-1914.  Good programs mean good attendance and greater activity.

    Newsletter Contributions

If you would like to offer an article or share some news or information, you are more than welcome to do so.  The Newsletter is a service to Chapter 5 members, and your contributions are encouraged.  Whether it is a technical offering, a historical article, or just a neat photo or link that might be of interest to our members, please forward it for inclusion so that all may enjoy.

---next TBPLS Board Meeting to be held in Austin on Friday October 15th at the TSPS Annual Convention and Exhibits in Houston at The Westin Galleria Hotel..  TThe TBPLS awards 4 CEU’s to attendees of their meetings.  Check the new Board website for information and meeting agenda (www.txls.state.tx.us ).  The Board is scheduled to consider adoption of the following rule:

6664.4 Continuing education courses and professional development undertaken by a registrant shall be acceptable if the activity is approved by the Board and falls in one or more of the following categories:

    (9) A maximum four (4) hours of self-directed study in a topic related to the practice of surveying

The TBPLS will accept comments regarding this rule until September 16/sth..
