Hot Off the Press….

The Bois d’Arc Post is the Official Chapter 5 Newsletter. This is your publication. It can never be any better than the flow of news you contribute. It is intended for Chapter 5 members and supporters to share ideas and information of interest, but it is also available to the general public. If you have any sort of information that would be of interest or beneficial to our members, please forward it so that we can include it in an upcoming edition. Contact Chapter 5 President Robert Cummings (972-440-3681) or Chris Freeman (972-226-8181) to discuss your Newsletter contribution. The Newsletter is maintained by Enterprise Operations, with maintenance funding provided by Lone Star Record & Abstract Services, Inc.

Certified Survey Technician examination date set for September 12th
A CST exam is scheduled for Saturday September 12th at the DFW Learning Center near SH 114 and Freeport Parkway in Irving. Examinees can take the exam online and receive instantaneous exam results, or opt for a paper exam. There are several levels of CST exams, for both field and office staff. It is a great way for paraprofessionals to obtain a certified level competency, and good for companies to demonstrate levels of competency of staff to clients. Space is limited for the online option. For information on the CST exam application call John Pierce at 214-631-7888.

Chapter Elections

A late change in the ballot for Chapter 5 officers required the ballot to be revised and resent to members.  Raul Wong, Jr. will ascend to take the helm of the Chapter.  Two new Directors will be chosen, as well as a 1st and 2nd VP.  Click here for a ballot.  Results should be tallied by September 14th, and the Officers installed by incoming TSPS state President Alan McLain at the September 21st joint meeting with Chapter 2 at the Grapevine Spring Creek BBQ at SH 114 and Main Street.  Please RSVP to Theron Sims so the restaurant has an idea of the number of attendees.  Dinner is through the buffet offered by Spring Creek BBQ.

2010 Teachers Retreat Approved by TSPS Board of Directors

At the August 29th TSPS Quarterly Board Meeting held in Austin, North Lake College was named as the host facility for the 2010 Teachers Retreat.  Dallas Chapter 5 and Chapter 2 (Ft. Worth) will co-sponsor the event, with tentative dates of June 16-18.  Volunteers will be needed to assist with the planning, the lectures and presentations, and the field exercises.  The purpose of the Retreat is to educate high school teachers about surveying, so that they can return to the classroom and incorporate real life survey problems and applications in their math and science classes.  A committee will be formed soon, this will be a great opportunity for us as professionals to share our profession with teachers.

In the Rearview Mirror…

---The August Chapter meeting had its typical solid turnout, with 40+/- attendees.  The scheduled speaker was unable to attend, so the attendees had the opportunity for a bit more social time, and to discuss some items of interest.

---Also, Bob Cummings recognized Sean Flaherty for his contributions to the Chapter with his efforts with the Golf Tournament, as well as several firms who always seem to answer the bell and assist the Chapter in its efforts and events (Dallas Aerial Surveys, Geomatic Resources, Lone Star Record & Abstract, Midwest A & E, Precise Land Records, and Western Data Systems).  Our host facility, Cantina Laredo Restaurant, was also recognized for their service and hospitality to the Chapter and its members and guests.

    CEU Requirement for Licensees

During the past legislative session, TSPS sponsored a bill to increase the CEU requirement for licensees from the current 8 hour per year requirement to a proposed 16 hours per year.  In the end, the TBPLS was given the opportunity to increase the requirement, but declined to do so at this time.  So, it appears that 8 hours of Continuing Education will remain the annual requirement.  However, it appears that beginning with 2010, the TBPLS will no longer keep track of the number of CEU hours licensees have accumulated.  It will be each licensed Surveyor’s responsibility to keep track of all earned CEUs, and be able to provide proof of such CEU if audited by the TBPLS.
