If you have any sort of information that would be of interest or beneficial to our members, please forward it so that we can include it in an upcoming edition.   In the Rearview Mirror...

September 11 Chapter Meeting Recap: The traditional meeting for Chapter Officer installation had a different twist…a runoff election was necessary due to 2 ties with the original election. Attending members were asked to vote to determine the 1st VP (Pat Baldasaro) and 2nd VP (Andy Dobbs), and Richard Ortiz was re-elected to a 2 year Director position. Installing all of the 2012-13 Chapter 5 Officers was TSPS President-elect Curtis Strong. Curtis and his wife Angela traveled up from Bryan. The last act performed by outgoing President Jason Jernigan was to acknowledge and present plaques of recognition to Mark Williams and Randall Marshall for their respective efforts with Chapter communications and SKILLS USA.

Following the installation ceremony, new Chapter President Justin Waldrip presented outgoing President Jason Jernigan with a plaque in recognition of his outstanding service to the Chapter, and a plaque was also presented to Halff Associates for its corporate contribution in assisting the Chapter with the Public Domain seminar. Congratulations for a job well done!

The 2012-2013 Chapter 5 Officers are as follows:

President Justin Waldrip, RPLS

1st Vice President Patrick Baldasaro, RPLS

2nd Vice President Andy Dobbs, RPLS

Secretary/Treasurer John Pierce, RPLS

1 year Director Gary Matthews, RPLS

1 Year Director Randall Marshall, RPLS

2 Year Director Robert Schneeberg, RPLS

2 Year Director Richard Ortiz

Past President Jason Jernigan, RPLS

Chapter Representative Chris Freeman, RPLS

Chapter Communications Mark Williams, RPLS

Members are reminded that the next TSPS Board of Directors Meeting will be held in the morning on Thursday October 11 in San Marcos at the Embassy Suites in conjunction with the TSPS Annual Convention.

SURPAC donations collected at the September meeting, the total for 2012 from Chapter 5 now stands at approximately $1,050.00. Members should realize that with a legislative session looming and the political winds continuing the march to cut spending and limit the size of government, there is a very real likelihood of renewed consolidation efforts that will face surveyors. So, raising funds takes on much importance…please contribute what you can. The Chapter 5 members attending our meetings have done their part. A $20-$50 donation by every TSPS member would quickly raise sufficient funds for the lobbying efforts that lie ahead. Click here for a copy of the SurPac Donation Form.

Chapter Activities Committeee Chairman and TSPS Vice-President Shane Neally recently shared the following information with Chapter Presidents:

Dear Chapter Presidents, Representatives and Area Representatives:

We need to raise $6000 in SURPAC contributions before November 6, 2012. At our Chapter Presidents Luncheon on Saturday August 18th we passed the bucket and raised over $1800, which was great but we need to raise the remainder to be able to contribute to our friends in the House and Senate.

At strategic planning TSPS President Elect, Curtis Strong, encouraged every registered member of TSPS to keep a jar on their desk and donate a quarter a day, Monday through Friday, for a year and that would total $65.00. Then if every registered TSPS member would do the same we would have over $ 74,000 for SURPAC.

SURPAC contributions must be made by personal check payable to SURPAC (no corporate checks can be accepted). Please complete the attached SURPAC Donation Form and mail with your check to TSPS, 2525 Wallingwood Drive, Suite 300, Austin, Texas 78746.

Thanks,

Shane Neally, Chapter Activities Chairman

Chapter Committee Reports: were provided by various Chairmen:

PUBLIC RELATIONS (Gary Matthews): Chapter 5 will be attending the Sellers Middle School (Garland ISD) Career Day event in December to speak to 3 classes of 8th graders about the surveying profession and career opportunities. Chapter 5 has attended this event for the past 8 years. Gary is actively hunting libraries across the Chapter 5 area that might host a Survey Display. Historically, Chapter 5 has arranged for a Survey Display during March in conjunction with Surveyors Week. But with the enthusiastic response received by library staff and patrons, there is no reason the Displays could not be presented year-round, rotating around town. So, next time you visit your local library, take a look around to see if they offer displays, and if so inquire as to when Chapter 5 might have the opportunity to share the survey profession with their library patrons. If you have PR opportunities for Chapter 5, please coordinate them with Gary Matthews (214-739-4741).

EDUCATION: (John Pierce) John administered the CST Level 1 test to 2 Duncanville H.S. students who scored more than 70 on the written portion of the Skills State Survey Contest back in March. One of the students scored high enough to obtain her CST Level 1 certification. This is the third high school student from Texas, and second from Duncanville H.S. to achieve the certification. She is also the first high school female in the country to achieve the certification, and points to the ongoing success of the Skills survey program at DHS.

The next Certified Survey Technician testing is scheduled for Saturday February 9, 2013 at the DFW Education Center of North Lake College.

Three survey courses at North Lake College “made” this semester, with a total of 23 students enrolled. Chapter 5 offers students the opportunity to apply for scholarship monies to cover tuition, text, and/or calculator costs. Thirteen scholarships were awarded for a total of $1,536.05 to student applicants for the Fall semester. Contact John Pierce for more info.

TREASURER’S REPORT: (John Pierce): General fund total is $5,658.94, and the Scholarship Fund totals $5,514.61. The Chapter ExCOM approved spending $1000 to support the Annual Convention, $300 for the Ladies Auxilliary, $500 to Duncanville HS Skills for their Fall Leadership Conference, and $500 for the 2013 Trig*Star activity.

SKILLS USA (Randall Marshall): The first opportunity is the Fall Leadership Conference on November 2 at TSTC in Waco. The Chapter has approved to spend $500 to support this event that brings hundreds of North Central Texas high schoolers together. Part of the event is demonstrating different activities (i.e. Land Surveying) to recruit new students, as well as training for returning students. Chapter 5 also provides volunteers to assist in the training sessions, and to provide information to prospective students and faculty interested in Skills surveying activities and competitions.

CHAPTER REP (Chris Freeman): The next Board meeting will be held in the morning on Thursday October 11. This is an abbreviated meeting with little action, as the Annual Meeting will follow and last most of the rest of the day. However, there will be some action directly related to a Chapter 5 membership issue that the Directors will have to weigh in on. Be sure to attend and observe your state Board of Directors.

TBPLS: Proposed rules changes are coming. Public comment is encouraged. Next TBPLS Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday October 11 in San Marcos at the TSPS Annual Convention. Attendees can receive 4 CEUs for attending the meeting. If you have never attended a TBPLS meeting, it is well worth it, and quite educational. The main topic will be the rule changes, but complaints will also be dealt with, as well as other business.

   On the Horizon ...

The next TBPLS Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday October 11 in San Marcos, and 4 CEUs are awarded to attendees of TBPLS Board meetings. See their website for meeting location and agenda information. (www.txls.state.tx.us).

The next regularly scheduled TSPS Board of Directors Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 11 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in San Marcos, Texas in conjunction with the TSPS Annual Convention.

Chapter 5 will be participating at the Sellers Middle School (Garland ISD) Career Day on December 6. Several volunteers are coordinating the efforts that traditionally allow for presentations to three different groups of 8th graders. This will make for the 7th straight year that Chapter 5 has presented students a view on surveying career options.

SIT and RPLS Study Groups
If you are preparing for either of the exams for October, the following study groups have proven very helpful for candidates in their preparation. The groups will typically meet in person as the exam day nears.
SIT Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/land_surv/
RPLS Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rpls_study_group/

Don’t Forget…Annual Convention in 2013 will be held in Arlington at the Sheraton Convention Center. Chapters 2 & 5 will co-host the event for the second time in 3 years. Richard Ortiz will be the co-Chair for the Convention Committee to plan the event. So there will be many opportunities for members to volunteer to help plan for the best convention ever.
