Thoughts for the Day….
“Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” – Will Rogers
“You never miss the water till the well has run dry.” -- Irish proverb

Paul Mannel, RPLS 2nd Vice President

John Melton, RPLS 2 year Director

Raul Wong, Jr., PE, RPLS Past President
Chris Freeman, RPLS Chapter Representative
-50 attendees came out to witness the Installation of the new Chapter 5 Officers. Incoming TSPS President John Watson came in from Midland to formally install the Chapter 5 leadership. He also shared his vision for the upcoming year with attendees, and challenged Chapter 5 to remain a strong leader for TSPS. Outgoing Chapter 5 President Raul Wong, Jr. was presented a plaque of Recognition from new Chapter President Jerry Lehew.
---John Pierce, Chapter 5 Secretary/Treasurer, reports that Chapter 5 has awarded over $1,500.00 in scholarship monies this semester to survey students enrolled in the 4 survey courses being offered at North Lake College for the Fall semester. An additional $350.00 is scholarships are pending, waiting on expense receipts. Monies generated from the annual Chapter 5 Golf Tournament, organized by Sean Flaherty, are the main fundraiser for these scholarships.
---Chapter 5 EXCOM voted to donate $300.00 to the Tyler JC Surveying & Mapping Program Book Fund. This program, organized annually by our friends at East Texas Chapter 4, provides survey course text books to the program’s survey students. This is a great use of our Chapter funds that benefits students that are aspiring to enter the survey profession., and it is nice to share our resources with other active Chapters.
---Additional Chapter 5 monies were appropriated to this year’s Annual Convention ($2,000.00) and the TSPS Auxiliary ($200.00). It is important that all Chapters take the opportunity to assist the events and causes of the others, when the benefit is for the entire Society membership and survey profession. Remember, next year the Annual Convention will be held in Frisco, so Chapter 5 will undoubtedly be in need of donations from other Chapters to help offset convention expenses.
Opportunities for You….
---Chapter 5 Committee Opportunities…any volunteer organization will only be as strong as the membership. Chapter 5 has a long history of being a “get ‘er done” Chapter, and is looked upon across the State as a leader in our association. There are a variety of opportunities for members to become active in different ways to help the Chapter promote the survey profession. Working on a Chapter committee helps progress these efforts at the local level, and even at the state level. A little work by many is more fruitful and less demanding that a lot of work by a few. Please consider working on a committee. Contact any of the Chapter 5 EXCOM members for information.
---Vote in state TSPS Elections…please take the time to exercise your vote in the TSPS state elections. Besides the Executive Board Officers, Chapter 5 has two candidates for Director on the TSPS Board of Directors. Chapter 5 has not had a Director on the TSPS Board for several years, which is somewhat puzzling seeing as how it is the second largest Chapter in the association, and arguably one of the more progressive Chapters. Chapter 5 members Jason Jernigan and Chris Freeman are both worthy candidates who have a history of dedicated effort for both the local Chapter and the association. Please support our local candidates, so that Chapter 5 has a strong and loud voice to help shape the future of the association and its role in the profession.
---TSPS Convention & Exhibits… check the association’s website for information on CEU courses available for the annual TSPS Convention being held in Houston this year. It looks like a variety of different topics are available, and it’s a great value to pick up 12 CEU’s for $200 (full registration). The TBPLS is also scheduled to hold one of its Board meetings (Friday October 15), and attendees receive 4 CEU’s for attending those meetings.
---Skills USA/Duncanville High School Survey Program…Chapter 5 EXCOM has voted to continue its strong commitment to the SkillsUSA survey program by expending $400 to the Fall Leadership Conference in Waco on November 12th. Chapter 5, along with staff and students from the Texas State Technical Institute, will conduct 2 two hour survey training sessions for interested Skills survey students from District 6 high schools. Chapter 5 will also have a booth to be able to promote surveying to interested faculty and students from the expected 800 attendees.
---Certified Survey Technician testing…the next available opportunity for the NSPS Certified Survey Technician certification testing is tentatively scheduled for Saturday December 4th at North Lake College – West Campus. This is a great opportunity for paraprofessionals at all levels to obtain knowledge/skill certifications that are recognized nationally. Encourage your paraprofessional staff to begin preparing for this opportunity.
---SIT & RPLS Exam Study Groups
October exam time is fast approaching! Halff Associates will host three study groups before the October exams for anyone studying for the SIT or RPLS exams. If you've come before – welcome back! If this is your first time we look forward to meeting you. Anyone from any company is more than welcome to come.
RPLS candidates also meet in their own group and work through analytical problems. Several topics from the legal portion of the exam also come up, but the main focus of the group is the analytical portion. It tends to be harder to study for alone. Analytical problems are notoriously hard to come by, so if you have any, please bring them. Bring your TBPLS approved calculator and some colored pencils for deed sketches.
The final meeting of this series will be from 8am-noon on Saturday October 9 at the Halff Associates' Richardson office (www.halff.com). As always, there is no charge for the groups and breakfast is provided for those who RSVP. Please RSVP by emailing Jason Jernigan at email@example.com
You can keep track of group meetings and access study material through the following two Yahoo groups. We’ve had Spam in the Yahoo groups recently so I’ve restricted who can become a member. This won’t affect you if you’re already a member, but I will have to approve any new people who want to join. Approval could take up to a day.
---North Lake College Fall Semester Survey Courses….Several of the Survey courses “made” for the Fall semester, including Introduction to Surveying, Surveying Calculations, GIS Applications, and Survey Legal Principals I. Support from local firms is essential in maintaining and growing a local surveying educational program that will benefit local employees and companies, and the profession, too.
--Monthly Meeting Program/Speaker ideas? If you have an idea regarding a Speaker or meeting Program, contact Program Committee Chairman Jason Jernigan (214) 346-6204. Good programs mean good attendance and greater activity.
If you would like to offer an article or share some news or information, you are more than welcome to do so. The Newsletter is a service to Chapter 5 members, and your contributions are encouraged. Whether it is a technical offering, a historical article, or just a neat photo or link that might be of interest to our members, please forward it for inclusion so that all may enjoy.
---next TBPLS Board Meeting to be held in Austin on Friday October 15th at the TSPS Annual Convention and Exhibits in Houston at The Westin Galleria Hotel.. The TBPLS awards 4 CEU’s to attendees of their meetings. Check the new Board website for information and meeting agenda (www.txls.state.tx.us ). The Board is scheduled to consider adoption of the following rule:
