It is intended for Chapter 5 members and supporters to share ideas and information of interest, but it is also available to the general public. If you have any sort of information that would be of interest or beneficial to our members, please forward it so that we can include it in an upcoming edition. Contact Chapter 5 President Raul Wong, Jr. (972-440-3681) or Chris Freeman (972-226-8181) to discuss your Newsletter contribution. The Newsletter is maintained by Enterprise Operations, with maintenance funding provided by Lone Star Record & Abstract Services, Inc.

Happy Halloween from T.S.P.S. Chapter 5

In the Rearview Mirror…

---The September Joint Chapter meeting held in Grapevine was another nice reunion of the two DFW area chapters.  Incoming TSPS President Alan McLain traveled up from Houston to install the Officers of each chapter, and give insight into what his vision is for the organization for the coming year and beyond.  Do your part and become involved.  Remember, any volunteer organization is only as strong as its member

--- The Texas Map Society held its fall meeting in Arlington October 2-4 at UT-Arlington.  As part of the event, a 4 hour PIONEER TEXAS SURVEYING exercise was conducted on the afternoon of Friday, October 2nd.  Four 10 person teams performed a closed traverse using antique chain and compass.  The Texas General Land Office Survey Director,  Bill O’Hara, joined local volunteer Metroplex Surveyors to perform the field exercise and calculations.  Ample opportunity to ask questions and use the various instruments made for a wonderful afternoon on the Texas prairie.  This was a great opportunity to share our profession with a very knowledgeable group who appreciate maps and the effort those goes with compiling maps.  To learn more of The Texas Map Society see this link: www.libraries.uta.edu/txmapsociety/

The Study Group has been inactive since the April exam, but will soon be reconvening. The group will meet several times on Saturday mornings at the Halff Associates office in Richardson in preparation for the scheduled October exams on the 23rd and 24th.  Rene Salinas is organizing 3 meetings before the October exams; sessions have been scheduled for Saturdays from 8am-noon for September 12th, September 26th, and October 10th.  In the meantime, anyone anticipating taking either of the October exams should utilize the next few weeks organizing their study materials and getting a jump on their preparations.  You can never start preparing early enough.

    Out On the Horizon…

    Annual Convention

The Annual Convention and Exhibits is fast approaching.  Being held in Austin this year, hope the Dallas contingent is a strong one.  If you are in town on Thursday October 22nd, try to attend the Business Meeting and Board of Directors Meeting to see your Society at work.

    Opportunities for You….

    CEU Requirement for Licensees

It appears that one thing new for 2010 is that Registered Surveyors will become responsible for keeping track of their CEUs.  Previously the TBPLS kept track of that information.  So, going forward, remember to keep a reproducible file of all the seminars and Continuing Education  events you attend so that the information can be forwarded to the TBPLS if audited.

At this time, it appears the Board will remain with the present 8 hour CEU requirement for license renewal.  But remember, a Board meeting will take place at the end of October, so keep an eye out for any unforeseen developments.

New Surveyor friendly website…check it out

When you have a minute, check this website out http://www.thegeoexperts.com .  It is a new website that contains short videos of Surveyors talking about Surveying.  Give it a look see.

Please take a moment to visit this informational Surveying website -    http://www.landsurveyor.us/learn_f1a.html

    Chapter Committee Reports

Education Committee:  Chairman John Pierce reports that there were 5 examinees for the Level III Certified Survey Technician exam, with 2 passing.  Additionally, one applicant sat for the Level I exam.

John also reports that Chapter 5 has provided text books to 9 students from the Legal Principles I course at North Lake College, and provided 1 book and 2 calculators for students taking SRVY 1315.  Chapter 5 has also provide approximately $1,500.00 in scholarships to students.

    Newsletter Contributions

If you would like to offer an article or share some news or information, you are more than welcome to do so.  The Newsletter is a service to Chapter 5 members, and your contributions are encouraged.  Whether it is a technical offering, a historical article, or just a neat photo or link that might be of interest to our members, please forward it for inclusion so that all may enjoy.

---next TBPLS Board Meeting to be held in Austin on October 30, 2009.  The TBPLS awards 4 CEU’s to attendees of their meetings.  Check the Board website for a location map (www.txls.state.tx.us ).
