Opportunities for You….
---Chapter 5 Committee Opportunities…any volunteer organization will only be as strong as the membership. Chapter 5 has a long history of being a “get ‘er done” Chapter, and is looked upon across the State as a leader in our association. There are a variety of opportunities for members to become active in different ways to help the Chapter promote the survey profession. Working on a Chapter committee helps progress these efforts at the local level, and even at the state level. A little work by many is more fruitful and less demanding that a lot of work by a few. Please consider working on a committee. Contact any of the Chapter 5 EXCOM members for information.
---News from the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying…At the last TBPLS Board Meeting, held October 15th in conjunction with the 59th TSPS Annual Convention in Houston, several new rules were passed that affect Texas surveyors:
Continuing Education Requirements
Changes in statute and Board rules have affected continuing education requirements in the following ways.
In order to renew for 2011 a surveyor must have 8 continuing education credits by December 31, 2010.
In order to renew for 2012 a surveyor must have 12 continuing education credits by December 31, 2011.
Surveyors are required to maintain a record of their own continuing education. After renewal, five percent of the population will be audited & required to provide continuing education certificates. The Board will no longer maintain continuing education records.
---Skills USA/Duncanville High School Survey Program…Chapter 5 EXCOM has voted to continue its strong commitment to the SkillsUSA survey program by expending $500 for the Fall Leadership Conference in Waco on November 12th. Chapter 5, along with staff and students from the Texas State Technical Institute, will conduct 2 two hour survey training sessions for interested Skills survey students from District 6 high schools. Chapter 5 will also have a booth to be able to promote surveying to interested faculty and students from the expected 800 attendees. If you would like to help with this event, please contact the Chapter 5 SkillsUSA Committee Chairman Richard Ortiz (214/994-9521) for additional information.
---North Lake College Spring Semester Survey Courses….Several Survey courses will be offered for the upcoming Spring semester at North Lake College. Due to Dallas County Community College District rules, classes must have a minimum of 8 students for the class to “make”. The following survey courses constitute the pool of available courses offered: Introduction to Surveying, Survey Calculations, Survey Measurement, Legal Principles I & II, Land Surveying Applications, Land Surveying, Geodetic Surveying & Mapping, and GIS Applications. All of these courses are recognized by the TBPLS as college credit survey courses. All courses are taught by a current or former Registered Professional Land Surveyor. Chapter 5 assists students who work for TSPS members by providing reimbursement for books and/or calculators. Encourage your paraprofessional staff to enroll in a course for the coming semester.
--Monthly Meeting Program/Speaker ideas? If you have an idea regarding a Speaker or meeting Program, contact Program Committee Chairman Jason Jernigan (214) 346-6204. Good programs mean good attendance and greater activity.
If you would like to offer an article or share some news or information, you are more than welcome to do so. The Newsletter is a service to Chapter 5 members, and your contributions are encouraged.
