In the Rearview Mirror…

--- A strong turnout for the May meeting and pending datum update presentation by UT-Dallas Professor and Geodesist Georgia Fotopoulis.  Great discussion, many new attendees, and several students from UT-Dallas and North Lake College.  65 attendees.

---11th Annual Tim Mireur Golf Tournament.... submitted by Sean Flaherty

On May 1st, the TSPS Dallas Chapter 5 sponsored the 11th Annual Tim Mireur Golf Tournament.  The event displayed 74 players and 14 Hole Sponsors.  This was a great turnout.

This tournament was initiated 11 years ago by a handful of local surveyors wanting to play golf in a somewhat organized manner.  Now each year the number of players varies from 70-100, which includes family members, clients, vendors and suppliers, engineers, architects, and other professionals and non-professionals in our industry.  It is not only a chance to play golf with some buddies and/or co-workers, but a great avenue for building client relations, networking, and strong camaraderie. This year started off with breakfast tacos sponsored by Rene Ortiz and Precise Land Records...good start to the day.  Then after play, everyone returned to the clubhouse for a fantastic lunch from Texas de Brazil.  You can’t ask for a better lunch then an endless supply of meat!

After lunch we completed the event by presenting awards and door prizes.  The 1st Place team was comprised of Rodney Walsh, Sue Stewart, Garey Gilley and Allen Peloquin, Runners Up were Bill Johnson, Kevin Hampton, Kim Speir and Mike Cuzzo, and the 3rd Place Team was Mark Eder, Mark Roberson, Chris Freeman and Wayne Simonson.  Additional awards given including the Long Drive which was won by Bill Johnson.  Of course Bill also received the “holy grail” of this tournament, which is a hard-hat with a tee and TSPS golf ball on top…quite the shelf decoration. The largest accolade for this tournament is that a portion of the proceeds are given to Dallas Chapter 5 to be used strictly for scholarships and education.  These monies will be used to pay for some survey-related classes, books and calculators for our local survey students.  This is a tremendous opportunity to promote our industry and enhance the awareness of land surveying at the local level. Every year we have several companies and individuals that sponsor this tournament.

This year the Hole Sponsors include the following:

ARS Engineers, Inc.

Bohannan Huston, Inc.

Courthouse Research Specialists

Fulton Surveying, Inc.

Geomatic Resources LLC

Halff Associates

Lamb-Star Engineering, L.P.

Lina T. Ramey & Associates, Inc.

McLaughlin Brunson Insurance Agency LLP

Midwest Architects & Engineers Supply, Inc.

Surveying and Mapping, Inc.

The Wallace Group, Inc.

TSPS Chapter 2

Western Data Systems, Inc.

Thanks to these sponsors we are better able to promote our local survey classes.

We need to give Special Thanks to John Nicholson and Midwest Architects & Engineers Supply.  They give extra each year and this year was no exception, with them providing the 1st Place prizes (putter and wedges), 2 additional drink tickets for each player, and several more door prizes.  They always go above and beyond! We would also like to recognize Sue Stewart and Fulton Surveying, and TSPS Chapter 2 (Fort Worth) for assisting in this fundraiser, and promoting these survey classes and students.  With Dallas and Fort Worth being so close in proximity, there is a lot of overlap of students and instructors for these classes.  Participation from both Chapters is a great testament to that partnership.

Once we balanced the income and expenses, the Chapter netted $2,756.64 to go towards our Education.  This is the third year that this tournament has provided funds to local scholarships, and the total amount donated for these 3 years is $7,756.64.  That is fantastic!!

If anyone is interested in speaking to someone about how these scholarships are awarded, please contact either John Pierce (214.631.7888) or Chris Freeman (972.226.8181 ext 106).  Or you can contact any one of the Chapter’s many active members and they can head you in the right direction.
Thanks again for everyone who participated, and another Special Thanks to our sponsors!!
I look forward to our 12th Tournament next spring.
Regards,
Sean M. Flaherty  Tournament Chair.

---Barton Burnett at ACSM Meeting….at the April meeting, members voted to spend $500 to assist in the expenses of Barton Burnett (SkillsUSA teacher at Duncanville H.S.) to travel to the ACSM Conference in Phoenix to give a presentation on surveying programs in high school curriculum.  Bart shared the success of the Skills survey program with TSPS and Chapter 5, and how Texas is leading the nation in these efforts.  Representatives from the Kansas and New Jersey surveyor associations are actively seeking assistance and guidance from TSPS as they begin to organize local, regional, and statewide high school level survey competitions, as well as organize Educator Retreats similar to the efforts of TSPS.  Great PR for all members of TSPS!

---Certified Survey Technician test date set….the next scheduled exam date for any of the Certified Survey Technician levels has been scheduled for Saturday August 14th at the West Campus of North Lake College.  This certification program is a great way for your paraprofessional staff to document their skill levels, both for office and field personnel.  You can download a practice test on the NSPS website via the CST link:                           ( www.nspsmo.org ).
For information regarding any aspect of the testing, contact John Pierce at 214-532-1667.

    Opportunities for You….

----2010 Teachers Retreat: Planning is nearly complete for the 2010 Teachers Retreat, which will be hosted by North Lake College, and jointly sponsored by TSPS Chapter 5 (Dallas) and Chapter 2 (North Central).  The dates are set, June 15-17.  With an expected 40+ high school educators attending, the hope is to have 25-30 Surveyors committed to volunteer some of their time during the Retreat to assist in the various activities that will familiarize the teachers with what Surveyors do.  Heading the Chapter 5 team is new Director Colin Henry.  Some of the Guest Speakers have already committees, including Keynote Speaker Brian Autio.  Also speaking are Nedra Foster and Darrell Shine.  There are classroom activities, as well as field exercises planned.  And more than anything, it is just casual interaction between Surveyors and educators that go such a long way in sharing who we are and what we do that will really dictate the success of the event.  Be a part of it!  Get on the Volunteer List by contacting Jerry Lehew at 972-442-5405.

    ----Chapter 5 needs You…

The strength of any volunteer organization lies in its members, and Chapter 5 is no different.  Our organization relies on the dedicated efforts of its members, both individually and collectively.  Willingness to serve the Chapter is a necessity, as it will bring a steady flow of new and fresh ideas and energy to the organization.  Each year, at least two Director positions become available, allowing for participation at the Chapter leadership positions.  If you are interested in such an opportunity, or know of someone who could serve in that role, please contact any member of the current Chapter 5 Executive Committee listed at the top of the Newsletter.  Chapter elections will likely occur in early August, prior to the September meeting when the new Chapter Officers will be sworn in by incoming TSPS President John Watson.
