In the Rearview Mirror…

---The May meeting had a strong turnout, with 40+ attendees.  Jack Avis, RPLS, traveled up from Austin to be our Guest Speaker.  He presented a nice program on GIS and how Surveyors should be utilizing it in their everyday business.   Barton Burnett (Duncanville H.S.) presented an Award of Recognition to Richard Ortiz for his many hours of service to the Skills/USA program at the school.

---Three individuals took the Certified Survey Technician Level 1 exam on May 9th, including 2 high school students.  One of the high school students and another examinee passed.  The high schooler is a student at Duncanville High School, and was a member of the 1st Place Team at the Skills/USA Survey statewide competition held in April.

--- Some 60+ Chapter 5 members, family, and friends ventured out to Lone Star Park on Saturday May 30th to enjoy a day at the races.  Organized by Robert Schneeberg, good time was had by all.  Some small fortunes were made, and then lost, ….so no one was able to hang up their surveying boots.

    Legislative Update…

The current session of the Texas Legislature has ended.  Bills that affected TSPS members included HB 1667 (GIS Disclaimer) and HB 3114 (Increased CEU requirement) had both passed in both the House and Senate, but due to politicking and stalling, many bills, including the referenced bills,  did not make it through the process to become official.  So, at this time neither of the bills is law

SIT & RPLS Exam Study Groups

The Study Group will be inactive for the next few months since the recent exams were just concluded in late April.  The Saturday group study sessions most likely will reconvene in August, in preparation for the scheduled October exams.  In the meantime, anyone anticipating taking either of the October exams should utilize the next few months organizing their study materials and getting a jump on their preparations.  You can never start preparing early enough.

You can also keep track of group meetings and access study material through the following two Yahoo groups:

SAVE TEXAS HISTORY!  General Land Office Historic Preservation Program

Created by Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson in 2004, the Texas General Land Office Save Texas History Program is a highly successful initiative to conserve the historic maps and documents of the very history that binds those documents together.

The Texas General Land Office Archives was first compiled just after the Texas Revolution and now contains over 35 million documents dating back to 1720.  The Archives is considered one of the premier state resources for historical research and serves as the repository for Texas land records and maps.

The conservation process for these historic documents is a delicate and time-consuming one.  For most maps, the treatment includes removal of surface dirt, water baths, deacidification, flattening, mending tears, reducing stains, removing old repair materials such as tape and varnish, and replacement of old backings with special Japanese Kozo paper.  Through this process, the GLO has already saved hundreds of historic maps.  But at least 400 more maps still need your help.

Next time you’re in Austin, stop by and visit the Map vault at the General Land Office.  You’ll find a surveyor friendly staff, and you’ll be amazed at the number of incredibly beautiful maps.  Walking out of the GLO office without purchasing a couple of maps is hard to do.  For more info on the GLO and the Save Texas History Program, refer to these links: www.savetexashistory.org (you can access the archived stories as told by our old friend Ben Thomson, past Director of Surveys for the GLO) and www.glo.state.tx.us .  Additionally, “This Week in Texas History” can be accessed locally via KVCE Radio 1160AM.

    Out On the Horizon….

The next Chapter 5 meeting will be held Tuesday June 9th at the Cantina Laredo Restaurant on Lover’s Lane.  Guest Speaker will be Glenn Breysacher, RPLS (City Surveyor for Garland) and Wayne Terry, RPLS, LSLS who will present a program on a possible Vacancy they discovered while surveying in Garland.    We will also honor the recent Trig*Star winners and their teachers at the meeting.  Come join us for good food, great camaraderie, and interesting professional food for thought and discussion.

    Opportunities for You….

TSPS Public Relations Committee is Soliciting Your Input

The State PR Committee, chaired by Chapter 5’s Chris Freeman, is asking for your input, ideas, and suggestions for a project.  The Committee is putting together information to make available to members and their firms related to Frequently Asked Questions.  The idea is that you could have a link on your website or a printed brochure available for your clients and/or the general public that explains different aspects about a survey, types of surveys, survey requirements, etc. so that people desiring survey services can better understand the process.  But, without input from members, this effort will not be as strong as it could be.  Forward your ideas to Chris Freeman via email at cfreeman@bhinc.com so that the Committee can incorporate your ideas in their efforts.  FYI, Chapter 5 has a FAQ link on our website.  Take a look at it for ideas.

    Newsletter Contributions

If you would like to offer an article or share some news or information, you are more than welcome to do so.  The Newsletter is a service to Chapter 5 members, and your contributions are encouraged.  Whether it is a technical offering, a historical article, or just a neat photo or link that might be of interest to our members, please forward it for inclusion so that all may enjoy.
