In the Rearview Mirror…

--- Another strong turnout for the monthly Chapter meeting in June.  Mark Eder of the TxDOT Dallas District shared information on the District’s Control monumentation and ROW monumentation process.  Great discussion.  Also, newly certified Surveyors In Training and new licensed Surveyors were introduced, congratulated, and provided a complimentary dinner.  65 attendees.

--- Congratulations to New SIT’s and RPLS’s….

Recent exam results from the TBPLS indicate that several individuals from the Chapter 5 area were successful.  Newly certified Surveyors In Training include Brandon Bullard, Steven Heilbrun, Michael Salcedo, and John Truong.  New licensed RPLS’s include Gabriel Bernier, Heath Brown, James Dobbs, and Vasileios Kalogirou.  Most of this group attended the June Chapter 5 meeting, where they were introduced, congratulated, and treated to a complimentary dinner from the Chapter in recognition of their achievement.  Hopefully we will see more of them at future Chapter meetings and events.

---Chapter 5 Day at Lone Star Park.... submitted by Robert Schneeberg

Several members ventured out to Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie on June 12th for a day at the horse races.  While no fortunes were made, fun was had by all.

---2010 Teachers Retreat:  The 4th Annual Educators Retreat was held June 15-17 at the North Lake College – West Campus in Irving.  The event was jointly sponsored by Chapters 5 and 2.  Great effort was expended in planning the event, let by TSPS University Advisory Committee Chairman and Chapter 2 member Bill Coleman.  Many TSPS members donated their time to assist with the successful event.  Among the Chapter 5 volunteers were Kevin Buchanan, Richard Ortiz, Jason Jernigan, Colin Henry, Rene Salinas, Jerry Lehew, Colin Henry and Chris Freeman.  Additional assistance was provided by WDS and Geomatic Resources.  The attending high school teachers were informed of the role surveyors play in society.  They were instructed in field techniques for traversing and leveling, and learned about geocaching.  They learned about the history of Texas surveying.  They were exposed to modern technologies utilized by surveyors both in the office and the field.  The teachers can hopefully return to their classrooms in the Fall and integrate real world surveying into their curriculum, and also help promote surveying as a possible career to some of their students.  Thanks to those Chapter 5 members who were able to share their time and their knowledge in helping to educate the public about our profession, as that is the duty of every professional.

    Opportunities for You….

------Certified Survey Technician test date set….the next scheduled exam date for any of the Certified Survey Technician levels has been scheduled for Saturday August 14th at the West Campus of North Lake College.  This certification program is a great way for your paraprofessional staff to document their skill levels, both for office and field personnel.  You can download a practice test on the NSPS website via the CST link: ( www.nspsmo.org ). For information regarding any aspect of the testing, contact John Pierce at 214-532-1667.

Chapter 5 needs You…The strength of any volunteer organization lies in its members, and Chapter 5 is no different.  Our organization relies on the dedicated efforts of its members, both individually and collectively.  Willingness to serve the Chapter is a necessity, as it will bring a steady flow of new and fresh ideas and energy to the organization.  Each year, at least two Director positions become available, allowing for participation at the Chapter leadership positions.  If you are interested in such an opportunity, or know of someone who could serve in that role, please contact any member of the current Chapter 5 Executive Committee listed at the top of the Newsletter.  Chapter elections will likely occur in early August, prior to the September meeting when the new Chapter Officers will be sworn in by incoming TSPS President John Watson.

North Lake College Fall Semester Survey Courses….It’s not too early to start preparing your staff/employees to the opportunities for advanced education.  Several survey classes will be offered at the North Lake College- West Campus in the Fall.  These are college credit courses recognized by the TBPLS and transferrable to other university programs across the State of Texas.  Further, Dallas Chapter 5 has monies available to assist students with their textbook purchase.

--Monthly Meeting Program/Speaker ideas?  If you have an idea regarding a Speaker or meeting Program, contact Program Committee Chairman Paul Mannel (817) 293-1914.  Good programs mean good attendance and greater activity.
