(Randall Marshall): Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center – SkillsUSA Duncanville High School Volunteer Project – Cedar Hill, TX
On December 14th, 2012, Bill Coleman, Richard Ortiz and I met with Bart Burnett and 14 students at Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center in Cedar Hill, Texas to assist Duncanville High School with a volunteer project they are taking on for SkillsUSA. The first goal of the day was to monument Dogwood Canyon’s West Loop Trail at 1/10th of mile intervals for a total of 1.3 miles. The students measured the intervals using a measuring wheel because the Audubon Center was interested in showing the intervals based on slope distances. Once the intervals were measured out, the students monumented the distance markers with a 4” by 4” wood post in concrete. In addition the West Loop trail was mapped using a handheld GPS unit that took shots every few seconds along the trail.
The second activity that students participated in was the process of looking for boundary corners on one of the tracts owned by the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center. The students learned about some of the tools that we use as surveyors to locate property monumentation to be used in resolving a boundary.
Future goals of the project include having the students run a level loop along the trail to provide elevations at every 1/10th mile marker. With the trail having approximately 150 feet of elevation change this should give the survey teams a great opportunity to practice their leveling.
We will have a few training sessions at Duncanville High School and the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center in January and February in Preparation for the SkillsUSA district competition in Waco, Texas on Friday March 1st. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you would like to volunteer please let me know and I will include you on the volunteer email list.

(Chris Freeman): If you have an issue that you would like to take to the TSPS state leaders, feel free to contact Chris and he will help guide you in that process. If possible, try to attend a Board of Directors meeting, and especially the various committee meetings held prior to the afternoon Board meeting. Any member can attend the committee meetings, where members work on a variety of topics and issues. Also, be aware that Chapter 5’s own Jerry Lehew is a Director, and can assist members with state related issues.
On the Horizon ...
Start 2013 off right, and join your fellow members at the Cantina Laredo Restaurant on Lovers Lane in Dallas for dinner and to welcome Guest Speaker Tony Estrada, Executive Director of the TBPLS. We are also expecting Board Investigator Garey Gilley to be in attendance. Hopefully you are aware that currently the TBPLS rules are being amended, so all surveyors should be monitoring and offering input in that process. Also, with the upcoming 2013 legislative session, TSPS leadership and the Governmental Affairs Committee (chaired by Mickey Nowell) are being vigilant in case potential legislation detrimental to either the Board or surveyors surfaces. Don’t miss this important meeting. Also be aware that Chapter 5 member Jerry Lehew was recently appointed TBPLS Liaison by TSPS President Curtis Strong…so Chapter 5 will be close to any and all activity at the TBPLS.
The next TBPLS Board Meeting is scheduled for Friday March 8 at 9 a.m., and 4 CEUs are awarded to attendees of TBPLS Board meetings. See their website for meeting location and agenda information. (www.txls.state.tx.us).
The next regularly scheduled TSPS Board of Directors Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 15-16 at the Omni Hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas in conjunction with the TSPS Symposium.
Chapter 5 will be participating at the Sellers Middle School (Garland ISD) Career Day on December 6. Several volunteers are coordinating the efforts that traditionally allow for presentations to three different groups of 8th graders. This will make for the 7th straight year that Chapter 5 has presented students a view on surveying career options.
SIT and RPLS Study Groups
If you are preparing for either of the exams, the following study groups have proven very helpful for candidates in their preparation. The groups will typically meet in person as the exam date nears. Soon a schedule will be out for the preparation for the upcoming April exams.

Don’t Forget…Annual Convention in 2013 will be held in Arlington at the Sheraton Convention Center. Chapters 2 & 5 will co-host the event for the second time in 3 years. Richard Ortiz will be the co-Chair for the Convention Committee to plan the event. So there will be many opportunities for members to volunteer to help plan for the best convention ever.
