Committee Reports…

--Public Relations Committee  Chairman Chris Freeman reports that Chapter 5 has donated 3 new automatic levels, with tripods and level rods, to a new engineering and science magnet high school in the Waxahatchie ISD.  Chapter 5 also involved the Dallas Chapter of TSPE to share in the equipment donation, and the equipment was presented to Instructor April Moon at a TSPE luncheon in December. Ms. Moon looks forward to having Surveyors come and present survey topics to her students.  A special thanks to Midwest A&E for their assistance.

Chapter 5 also has made a recent donation of several used 100 foot add chains to the Duncanville High School SkillsUSA program.  Lennie Lueker also provided some used survey software and user manuals  for the Skills program.  In addition, John Pierce recently delivered some used survey equipment that was donated by member John Vicain that included 2 transits, a Wild T1A, several tripods, chains, maps, and other assorted doodads.  Thanks John!  If you have old unused items lying around, contact any of the Chapter 5 Officers so that the equipment can be directed to one of the many schools that have survey and construction curriculum.  The profession receives great PR from such donations.  Currently 5 “survey teams” at the school are preparing for District level competition, with the 3 top teams advancing to the state competition to be held in March in Corpus Christi.  The District competition will be held at Duncanville High School on Friday February 5.

No other Committees submitted reports before the Newsletter was posted.

    Out On the Horizon…

--North Lake College Spring Semester course offerings…Plan ahead for the Spring semester with the following six survey related courses that will be offered for college credit.  It is important that the classes continue to be promoted and that employees be encouraged to enroll.  Chapter 5 has been generous to students who apply for assistance with course textbook and supply expenses.   Contact Education Committee Chairman John Pierce for info (214-631-7888).  Click here for info.

---Certified Survey Technician test date set….the next scheduled exam date for any of the Certified Survey Technician levels has been scheduled for Saturday April 10th at the West Campus of North Lake College.  This certification program is a great way for your paraprofessional staff to document their skill levels, both for office and field personnel.  You can download a practice test on the NSPS website via the CST link:  ( www.nspsmo.org ).

--2010 Teachers Retreat: Planning has begun for the 2010 Teachers Retreat, which will be hosted by North Lake College, and jointly sponsored by TSPS Chapter 5 (Dallas) and Chapter 2 (North Central).  The dates are set, June 15-17.  With an expected 40 high school educators attending, the hope is to have 25-30 Surveyors committed to volunteer some of their time during the Retreat to assist in the various activities that will familiarize the teachers with what Surveyors do.  Heading the Chapter 5 team is new Director Colin Henry.  There are classroom activities, as well as field exercises planned.  And more than anything, it is just casual interaction between Surveyors and educators that go such a long way in sharing who we are and what we do that will really dictate the success of the event.  Be a part of it!

    Opportunities for You….

--SkillsUSA Survey Program at Duncanville High School:  Barton Burnett, Faculty Advisor, is requesting assistance from Chapter 5 members to assist his 5 “survey crews” in their preparation for upcoming competitions.  Generally, he needs volunteers to come and provide instruction and guidance for the students in field activities and overall surveying instruction.  Do you have 1 hour a week, from 3-4 pm, that you could spend with 8-12 students, going over questions they have related to surveying?  It would be great to have a pool of Surveyors that could share this great outreach with young students interested in our profession.  Volunteers will also be needed to monitor and judge the District Survey completion, to be held Friday February 5th at Duncanville H.S.  If you can be part of the Chapter 5 pool, please contact SkillsUSA Committee Chairman Jerry Lehew (972-442-5405) or Chris Freeman (972-226-8181).

--Monthly Meeting Program/Speaker ideas?  If you have an idea regarding a Speaker or meeting Program, contact Program Committee Chairman Paul Mannel (817) 293-1914.  Good programs mean good attendance and greater activity.

    Newsletter Contributions!!!

If you would like to offer an article or share some news or information, you are more than welcome to do so.  The Newsletter is a service to Chapter 5 members, and your contributions are encouraged.  Whether it is a technical offering, a historical article, or just a neat photo or link that might be of interest to our members, please forward it for inclusion so that all may enjoy.
