In the Rearview Mirror...
Did you hear? Chapter 5 was awarded the STAR CHAPTER AWARD at the TSPS Board of Directors Meeting held at the Convention. The award is a direct reflection upon the leadership of Chapter 5, and specifically Past president Jason Jernigan. He was cited for his innovative ideas related to the free Ethics seminar and Chapter sponsored seminar broadcast across the State; membership activities; Skills USA survey program interaction; Chapter scholarship fundraising through the Annual Golf Tournament; Trig*Star activities; and other Chapter activities. Jason served the Chapter, its members, and TSPS with dedicated and devoted service, and it was nice to see him and the Chapter recognized for their efforts. Chapter 5 has long been a leader within TSPS, and Jason has left the bar set at a high level for those following in his footsteps.
The November meeting had several guests attending. Duncanville High School Skills teacher Bart Burnett brought one of his survey students, Jessica Escobar. She recently passed the NSPS Certified Survey Technician certification test, becoming the only female high school student in the nation to achieve that certification. She is the second DHS student to achieve this, and is one of only 3-4 high schoolers in the nation to have achieved the certification. She is a junior this year, and is a leader in this year’s Skills survey activities at the school.
The guest speaker was Bill Johnson, Jr., from Dallas Aerial Surveys. Bill spoke on the evolving technology of photogrammetry and aerial mapping, and how surveyors contribute to such efforts as well as utilize the data. About 30 members were attending.
Chapter 5 member Jerry Lehew is a newly elected TSPS Director, and will be sitting at the Board of Directors meetings for the next two years. Chris Freeman’s term as Director expired, but he will continue to attend Board meetings as the Chapter 5 Representative and the North Area Representative. Any issues members have can always be directed to Jerry or Chris if needed.
Chapter Committee Reports: were provided by various Chairmen:
(Gary Matthews): Chapter 5 will be attending the Sellers Middle School (Garland ISD) Career Day event in December to speak to 3 classes of 8th graders about the surveying profession and career opportunities. Chapter 5 has attended this event for the past 8 years. Gary is actively hunting libraries across the Chapter 5 area that might host a Survey Display. Historically, Chapter 5 has arranged for a Survey Display during March in conjunction with Surveyors Week. But with the enthusiastic response received by library staff and patrons, there is no reason the Displays could not be presented year-round, rotating around town. So, next time you visit your local library, take a look around to see if they offer displays, and if so inquire as to when Chapter 5 might have the opportunity to share the survey profession with their library patrons. If you have PR opportunities for Chapter 5, please coordinate them with Gary Matthews (214-739-4741).
(John Pierce) A full slate of Survey courses will once again be offered at North Lake College for the Spring semester. Registration is ongoing, and can be done online. The Chapter has scholarship monies available to employees of registered members. Contact John for details. Click here for Courses and info.
(John Pierce): John reported financial numbers, with healthy balances for both the general fund and the scholarship fund.

(Randall Marshall): The first opportunity was the Fall Leadership Conference on November 2 at TSTC in Waco. The Chapter approved spending $500 to support this event that brings hundreds of North Central Texas high school students together. Part of the event is demonstrating different activities (i.e. Land Surveying) to recruit new students, as well as training for returning students. Chapter 5 also provided volunteers to assist in the training sessions, and to provide information to prospective students and faculty interested in Skills surveying activities and competitions. Attending from Chapter 5 were Randall Marshall, Andy Dobbs, and Justin Waldrip. Randall has also coordinated the training schedule for prepping the survey students for their competitions, which begin in February and culminate in April at the state contest. Let Randall know if you are interested in assisting with the hands-on training.
(Chris Freeman): The TSPS Board is allowing Chapter 5 to continue its members who live outside the Chapter’s geographic boundaries to remain members of Chapter 5. This issue surfaced last summer, and then Chapter Preseident Jason Jernigan did a nice job of putting the facts together that showed many Chapter 5 members who work in Dallas live in outlying counties.
On the Horizon ...
The next TBPLS Board Meeting is scheduled for Friday December 14 at 9 a.m., and 4 CEUs are awarded to attendees of TBPLS Board meetings. See their website for meeting location and agenda information. (www.txls.state.tx.us).
The next regularly scheduled TSPS Board of Directors Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 15-16 at the Omni Hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas in conjunction with the TSPS Symposium.
Chapter 5 will be participating at the Sellers Middle School (Garland ISD) Career Day on December 6. Several volunteers are coordinating the efforts that traditionally allow for presentations to three different groups of 8th graders. This will make for the 7th straight year that Chapter 5 has presented students a view on surveying career options.
SIT and RPLS Study Groups
If you are preparing for either of the exams, the following study groups have proven very helpful for candidates in their preparation. The groups will typically meet in person as the exam day nears.

Don’t Forget…Annual Convention in 2013 will be held in Arlington at the Sheraton Convention Center. Chapters 2 & 5 will co-host the event for the second time in 3 years. Richard Ortiz will be the co-Chair for the Convention Committee to plan the event. So there will be many opportunities for members to volunteer to help plan for the best convention ever.
