Committee Reports…

--Public Relations Committee  Chairman Chris Freeman reports that Chapter 5 was represented at a Career Day event at Sellers Middle School (Garland ISD) on November 11.  Chris spoke to three eighth grade classes, each with 25 students, showing the TSPS Survey video and answering questions about the profession and its career opportunities.

The Committee is also working to have a video produced about the successes of the SkillsUSA high school programs, specifically at Duncanville High School.  Discussions are ongoing with faculty at Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland.  Bart Burnett and his students will be the “stars” of the video.

The Committee has also been successful in establishing a relationship with a high school in the Waxahachie ISD, and for arranging for an equipment donation to the school.  Chris arranged for TSPE to share in the donation with TSPS Chapter 5(see article under Opportunities for You).

The Committee reports that the Duncanville ISD Newsletter recently featured several of the SkillsUSA survey students from Duncanville High.  The article also promptly mentioned the support and assistance that has come from TSPS.

Mountain View Community College has recently taken steps to begin a Civil Engineering degree program, and through the urging of Bart Burnett (Skills USA Faculty Advisor at Duncanville H.S.), Land Surveying is to be an integral part of the program.  Chris Freeman has been invited to participate on the Advisory Board.  Lots of potential here, as this would be a second Dallas County Community College to offer survey related courses.  Stay tuned for developments and opportunities.

No other Committees submitted reports.

In the Rearview Mirror…

--- November meeting had 45 attendees to hear an informative presentation on the new Elevation Certificate requirements.  Guest Speaker Leon Curtis of the Texas Water Development Board delivered a nice program with very important information to those who prepare such documents.  A recent TBPLS hearing dealt with issues related to inaccurate Elevation Certificates in the Beaumont area, where entire subdivisions were apparently erroneously mapped due to a benchmark issue.  The resulting harm to the public was substantial.

    Out On the Horizon…

--North Lake College Spring Semester course offerings…Plan ahead for the Spring semester with the following six survey related courses that will be offered for college credit.  It is important that the classes continue to be promoted and that employees be encouraged to enroll.  Chapter 5 has been generous to students who apply for assistance with course textbook and supply expenses.   Contact Education Committee Chairman John Pierce for info (214-631-7888).  Click here for info.

--2010 Teachers Retreat: Planning has begun for the 2010 Teachers Retreat, which will be hosted by North Lake College, and jointly sponsored by TSPS Chapter 5 (Dallas) and Chapter 2 (North Central).  The dates are set, June 15-17.  With an expected 40 high school educators attending, the hope is to 25-30 Surveyors committed to volunteer some of their time during the Retreat to assist in the various activities that will familiarize the teachers with what Surveyors do.  Heading the Chapter 5 team in new Director Colin Henry, so let Colin know how you can help put on a nice event.  There are classroom activities, as well as field exercises planned.  And more than anything, it is just casual interaction between Surveyors and educators that go such a long way in sharing who we are and what we do that will really dictate the success of the event.  Be a part of it!

    Opportunities for You….

--SkillsUSA Survey Program at Duncanville High School:  Barton Burnett, Faculty Advisor, is requesting assistance from Chapter 5 members to assist his 5 “survey crews” in their preparation for upcoming competitions.  Generally, he needs volunteers to come and provide instruction and guidance for the students in field activities and overall surveying instruction.  Do you have 1 hour a week, from 3-4 pm, that you could spend with 8-12 students, going over questions they have related to surveying?  It would be great to have a pool of Surveyors that could share this great outreach with young students interested in our profession.  If you can be part of the Chapter 5 pool, please contact SkillsUSA Committee Chairman Jerry Lehew (972-442-5405) or Chris Freeman (972-226-8181).

See a nice article from the Duncanville ISD Newsletter that highlights the SkillsUSA survey program and some of its students.  Click here.

--Waxahachie Global High School, a new engineering and science magnet school, has requested assistance from Chapter 5 to provide 3 automatic levels with tripods and level rods for their start up program.  Chris Freeman solicited the support of the Dallas Chapter of TSPE to share this donation with TSPS Chapter 5.  Not only will this be a great gesture from Chapter 5, but it also will act as a fine example to the students and faculty of the school of how the two professional associations can work together for a great common cause.  The cost to Chapter 5 will be $442.50.  The equipment will be purchased from long time Chapter 5 supporter Midwest A&E.  There will undoubtedly be opportunities for Chapter 5 members to present survey demonstrations, career opportunity information, and surveying application presentations to students for many years to come.  Be a part of it.

--Monthly Meeting Program/Speaker ideas?  If you have an idea regarding a Speaker or meeting Program, contact Program Committee Chairman Paul Mannel (817) 293-1914.  Good programs mean good attendance and greater activity.

    Newsletter Contributions!!!

If you would like to offer an article or share some news or information, you are more than welcome to do so.  The Newsletter is a service to Chapter 5 members, and your contributions are encouraged.  Whether it is a technical offering, a historical article, or just a neat photo or link that might be of interest to our members, please forward it for inclusion so that all may enjoy.
