Committee Reports…

  -   Public Relations Committee:

The Chapter 5 PR Committee arranged for a Library Survey Display at the South Garland Branch Library located at the southeastern corner of Broadway Blvd. and Wynn Joyce.  The display will be at the Library for the entire month of April, in three multi level glass display cases.  The Library Director commented that the display is always one of the most popular displays.  Contributors included Martha Compton, Rudy Santini, and Chris Freeman.   The Committee also submitted an article to the suburban Dallas Morning News Neighbors edition about Surveying and Chapter 5’s ongoing outreach to local schools, including the successful SkillsUSA program at Duncanville High School.

In the Rearview Mirror…

--- We had a great turnout for our March monthly meeting, with Jim Bob Sims from DIGTESS presenting an informative program with interest to Surveyors.  There were 50+ attendees.

-- The SkillsUSA State Survey Competition was held on Thursday and Friday March 25 and 26 in Corpus Christi.  Seven 3-person teams from 5 different school districts competed, including 2 teams from Duncanville high School.  Chapter 5 volunteers included Richard Ortiz and Chris Freeman, who assisted with providing survey equipment and judging/monitoring the field traverse and level loop portions of the contest.  A team from Mansfield took First Place, a team from Birdville placed Second, and teams from Duncanville placed Third and Fourth.  Both Duncanville teams had two girls each.  Congratulations to all the competitors.  Robert Young supplied personnel and equipment for videotaping the event.  Excerpts should soon be available on the TSPS website.

Local Surveyor exposes Students to Surveying

                    Submitted by Charles Hervey, Jr.

R.P.L.S. John Michael Stepp recently spent a Saturday afternoon sharing the surveying profession with some students who traditionally have not been aware of careers in surveying. John spent several hours on March 6, 2010 talking to students about different opportunities in surveying. John shared information such as the educational background you need to work in the surveying profession, the many different positions in surveying and the qualifications of becoming a registered professional land surveyor. The students are members of the Alpha Merit Group, Inc. which is the mentoring arm of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter, Dallas, Texas. Charles Hervey, who is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., explains that one of the objectives of the Alpha Merit Group is to expose the students to as many different professions as possible at an early age. Surveying was the profession for the month of March.

---Elementary Students Role Play Pioneer Surveyors…Retired historian Susanne Starling recently spent a day with Rockdale, Texas elementary students and conducted a Pioneer Surveyor-themed program.  Ms. Starling is a past Chapter 5 meeting presenter, and was the TSPS Annual Convention Keynote Speaker in San Antonio and Arlington.

Sixth grade students at Rockdale (TX) Junior High School recently participated in a role-playing exercise reenacting a pioneer surveying party of the Republic of Texas
Ten students portrayed the surveyor, his rodman, brush cutters, guards, chainbearers, and cook.  Simple props included a cardboard peepsight compass, two sticks for the Jacob's staff and rod, a small notebook for field notes, cardboard rifles and machetes, four metal rods and string for the chain, and a spoon and tin pan for the cook.
Susanne Starling, author of the biography of Warren A. Ferris (who surveyed Dallas County), pioneer Texas surveyor, explained the methods used and the pressures, hardship, and dangers endured by early surveyors.  She then contrasted their life with that of modern surveyors.  Informally quizzed before and after the exercise, the class gained insights into the important work of surveyors and career possibilities and training available.  For a lesson plan describing details of the role-playing exercise contact Ms. Starling at susstar@hotmail.com

---Certified Survey Technician test date set….the next scheduled exam date for any of the Certified Survey Technician levels has been scheduled for Saturday April 10th at the West Campus of North Lake College.  This certification program is a great way for your paraprofessional staff to document their skill levels, both for office and field personnel.  You can download a practice test on the NSPS website via the CST link:                           ( www.nspsmo.org ).
